Perfumery, otherwise known as the art of making perfumes, began in Mesopotamia in Egypt but was developed and refined by the Romans and Persians. Distilling flowers and oil with aromatics resulted in what we now know as perfumes. People kept the art a closely guarded secret, and even now the big houses that make perfumes refuse to divulge their secrets and the actual ingredients used. Most perfumes are scented oils blended in alcohol solutions. People have always used perfumes. In the earlier days they were perhaps even made at home. There were people who literally pounded and sifted, squeezed and collected scents from flowers and fruits, from leaves and bark, herbs and spices, and prepared concoctions that soon became quite popular amongst their lot. Different countries and even different civilisations had their own brand of perfume. Musk, however, has had a universal appeal.

It is true that if you smell good, you feel good and confident, and do not feel self conscious. Almost everyone loves perfumes, body lotions, after shave, deodorants and the like, as they have interesting and enticing scents that help them get noticed and at the same time make them feel refreshed and rejuvenated. A number of online stores now offer a whole range of original branded perfumes. They have colognes, lotions, rare fragrances and a variety of other products which can be bought through a convenient online process, and they are also available at different prices that cater to a variety of clientele.

Women’s perfume is very different from men’s cologne. They are more delicate feminine scents and fragrances, and often have a sensual quality about them. Flowery varieties that carry the fragrances of roses, lilies and jasmine are also categorised as feminine scents. Men’s perfumes generally tend to be musky and male-oriented. There are special male fragrances that are used in after shave lotions, men’s cologne and after shave gels. Though toiletries include sweet smelling soaps, today body gels seem to be catching on fast, and these are also available in a variety of fragrances. Today, with personal hygiene being placed on top of the grooming list for men and women, personal toiletries such as perfumes, lotions, gels and body bath products have truly come of age.

Perfumes and colognes have always remained a favourite when it comes to picking up gifts. With these now being available online, shopping has become truly convenient – especially for those who just don’t seem to have the time to step out and pick up a gift. With the festive season just around the corner, most stores (both online and the bricks-and-mortar variety) are showcasing women’s perfume, men’s grooming products, and bath and body products as innovative and creative gifting ideas. There are various gift sets with elaborate packaging which can be picked up by those who want to try out something different for Christmas presents this season. Bearing exotic fantasy names and soul stirring fragrances, these products reach out appealingly to the grooming-conscious, promising to make them feel special and extremely attractive.
